Review

After this project I've reflexed on all the elements that I've done in order for it to come together. I've enjoyed this project and the themes I've explored throughout it, looking into functionality and how aesthetic can be detrimental to an items use is something I've been interested in and so wanted to apply it to my work. I've looked into new designers (such as acronym), which has been educational for me to explore and broadened my knowledge of the fashion industry and the variety of brands. Even though there has been plenty of areas that I've enjoyed some parts of this module have been a bit more of a struggle, initially the writing didn't come to me but once I had finalised my bag idea it came to me what I wanted to include. I also had to filter through a lot of designers and content that wasn't relevant in order to include the ones where the idea of function over aesthetic is their aim.

If I was going to do this over again I would look into different materials and fastenings to alter the aesthetic value and see if it changes the function of the dry bag, typically usually waterproof and air-tight materials.

Overall I'm happy with the outcome of the bag and the content to go alongside it. Doing the blog has allowed me to get down all the content I needed and figure out which is necessary for my essay.

Potential Designs

Now that I've decided on where I want to go with the project I've started looking into shape and fastenings to begin the design development. Still keeping it quite traditional to a dry bag shape but I want to incorporate the idea of making it dual function. With this in mind I started sketching and thought of the idea to make it detachable so it could be a belt once the bag it removed.  This first sketch is looking at making into a belt and bag. The bag would be attached with press studs so it can be easily removed. I want to create something that has a chic aesthetic, nothing too extravagant because I want most of the focus to be on the function of the bag.   This second sketch that I did looks at giving it two compartments to make it multi-use. The idea would be that the outer bag can zip off or be a compartment if needed. There would be a draw string close to allow for more space and then the bag behind has a strap so it can still be used. Initial ideas

When I first started this brief the initial idea of jewellery came to mind. I'd already got some images in my head from my favourite brands that would inspire my own piece, most of them are organic yet simple designs which is what I wanted to achieve. The almost unpolished aesthetic to these pieces is what appeals to me so I wanted to include this style in my potential designs. These shapes remind me of seabeds and coral which links to the images I started collecting on pinterest. In order to achieve this it would involve the use of the metal work facilities which is something I'd have to look into, without the facilities it would prevent me from going ahead with this idea.

Save the Duck

Whilst looking into brands that have a specific ethos I came across this one called 'Save the Duck'. I personally like that they are cruelty free and vegan which is something I'd want to incorporate into my designs and practice as I live a vegan lifestyle. It's refreshing to know that there are brands out there that are creating contemporary garments that aren't made using animal and compromising the aesthetic or function of the jacket. Most of the jackets they sell are waterproof or have certain qualities that make them suitable for outdoor weather, the look of the garment is  still considered but it is obvious that the function and ensuring the garment is sustainable/recycled were possible is the main focus.  Here's the link to have a look at other styles and colours they do.  https://www.savetheduck.it/ce_en/men/fall-winter/focus-on/recycled.html
